What makes a good writer?

Truman Capor quoted

“Intelligence alone cannot make a good writer and style alone can not make a good writer – that is, not a really important or significant writer, but the two things together make a really good writer.”

Writing any content is an art that actually converts thoughts into ideas. It is the key source of
creating the first impression about anything. Either it is a website, a product or anything else, the description written on that is the first tool to find out what benefits it will be given to the users. A good description must be written by a good writer and what characteristics that make any writer a good one are discussed as follows.

All writers should write for a purpose and for an audience.

Writers should make important choices about:

  • How each sentence is structured (short, simple, compound, complex, start with a verb, an adverb, a connective, the passive voice, description? So many choices!! Try them all.
  • Choice of vocabulary (there is the perfect word for every sentence). Remember a good writer shows the audience what he or she wants them to imagine by describing characters and events. Try not to give your audience all of the answers. A good reader enjoys finding the clues that the writers leave behind.
  • Do not forget to punctuate your writing clearly. It makes it easier to read.

The first and foremost thing that the writer must know before writing any material are the basic seven C’s of communication. Either he is writing for business communication, a product description or a formal/informal conversation; seven C’s of communication are always applicable and helpful in conveying the message efficiently and effectively.

A good writer’s content must be

  • Concise: It means that content is brief and goal oriented. Conveys the message in limited but impactful words.

  • Clear:  A message must be in easy and understandable language so that the reader easily understands the writer’s point of view.

  • Concrete: Content must capture the clear image of what the writer wants to tell.

  • Complete: A message must cover all the important aspects, information and features that a reader wants to know.

  • Correct: Do not deceive the reader by giving a fault description. The correct and surely a true content, build trust and credibility about the writer.

  • Coherent: The logical and relevant points in the content make it good.

  • Courteous: While writing anything, a good writer must use the polite and friendly tone and intentionally or unintentionally does not insult or hurt the feeling of others.

Other Qualities of a Good Writer:

Error Free Writing:

The beauty of content is hidden in error free writing. It is the quality of a good writer that his material is always free from all grammatical and spelling mistakes.

Unique style:

The words alone are not enough to create an impact on the reader, but the way of writing these words must create impact and long-lasting impression on the minds of the reader. Thus a unique style of writing that differentiates any writer from the other is the most important thing for any writer.

Original Content:

A good writer must be able to generate his own content after doing extensive research and study. The knowledge and information that the writer wants to spread must be 100% original and exclusive.

Reader’s Oriented Content:

A good writer always writes a reader oriented content. He must keep in mind about the mental level, educational standards and way of understanding of reader because a writer is writing for them not for his own self.

Make the Content Enjoyable:

The best quality that makes any writer the best one is that he conveys his message in that interesting way that the reader always love to read the material. No one wants to read the same kind of boring and detail content, so it’s the quality of the writer that converts the boring content into an enjoyable one that person cannot resist to learn from that.

Thus, a good writer believes that communicate thoughts through words is not only a talent, but like a skill that can be learnt by keeping some above points in mind.
